Ep 6. Parenting Teens with Compassion and Neuroscience: A Conversation with Tiffany Grimes

Welcome back to Parents and Teens Rising! Today’s episode is a little different; I’m resharing a recent conversation where I was interviewed by my mentor and colleague Tiffany Grimes on her podcast Rewired: Neuroscience Meets Real-Life Change. This originally aired as Episode 8, Rewiring How We Parent Teens with Neuroscience and Coaching. Tiffany is the CEO of Empower Coaching and Training and a powerhouse in the coaching industry.

In the episode, we explore what’s really happening in the developing teen brain and how parents can use compassion, curiosity, and coaching strategies to move from frustration to connection. You’ll learn how boundaries can both empower and support independence, why mistakes are opportunities for growth, and how open-ended questions can spark real dialogue with your teen.

We also dive into the role of rites of passage and nature-based experiences in supporting identity formation and resilience, plus the importance of practicing self-compassion as a parent.

Whether you’re seeking practical strategies, neuroscience-backed insights, or soulful wisdom, this episode will equip you with tools to strengthen your relationship with your teen and rewire the way you respond.

Kerrick Gooden

Guide

Kerrick was raised in the Hill Country of Austin, Texas where he studied at the University of Texas. After some travel, he moved to the Rogue Valley of Oregon with a vision to farm and support youth. He completed his Bachelor’s of Science in Applied Cultural Anthropology with Honors in 2004 at Southern Oregon University, and devoted over a decade supporting youth and their families navigate  local and state social service programs. During this time, he and his partner cultivated a food forest at their home and founded Verdant Phoenix as an educational mini-farm in 2016.

Verdant Phoenix Farm became an expression of a way of life for Kerrick. He is interested in the relationships between humans, soil, microbes, plants/trees/shrubs, food, culture, time, and the web of life. As these elements inform his horticultural practice, Kerrick enjoys supporting landscapes, gardens, farms, and their people who are interested in belonging to the land.
